Lithium-rich Giants in Globular Clusters

چکیده
Although red giants deplete lithium on their surfaces, some giants are Li-rich. Intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can generate Li through the Cameron–Fowler conveyor, but the existence of Li-rich, low-mass red giant branch (RGB) stars is puzzling. Globular clusters are the best sites to examine this phenomenon because it is straightforward to determine membership in the cluster and to identify the evolutionary state of each star. In 72 hours of Keck/DEIMOS exposures in 25 clusters, we found four Li-rich RGB and two Li-rich AGB stars. There were 1696 RGB and 125 AGB stars with measurements or upper limits consistent with normal abundances of Li. Hence, the frequency of Li-richness in globular clusters is (0.2±0.1)% for the RGB, (1.6±1.1)% for the AGB, and (0.3±0.1)% for all giants. Because the Li-rich RGB stars are on the lower RGB, Li self-generation mechanisms proposed to occur at the luminosity function bump or He core flash cannot explain these four lower RGB stars. We propose the following origin for Li enrichment: (1) All luminous giants experience a brief phase of Li enrichment at the He core flash. (2) All post-RGB stars with binary companions on the lower RGB will engage in mass transfer. This scenario predicts that 0.1% of lower RGB stars will appear Li-rich due to mass transfer from a recently Li-enhanced companion. This frequency is at the lower end of our confidence interval.

On 7Li Enrichment by Low-Mass Metal-Poor Red Giant Branch Stars.
First-ascent red giants with strong and very strong Li lines have just been discovered in globular clusters. Using the stellar internal prompt (7)Li enrichment-mass-loss scenario, we explore the possibility of (7)Li enrichment in the interstellar matter of the globular cluster M3 produced by these Li-rich giants. We found that enrichment as large as 70% or more compared to the initial (7)Li con...
متن کاملDDO Photometry of M71: Carbon and Nitrogen Patterns Among Evolving Giants
We present V , B − V, and DDO C(41 − 42) and C(42 − 45) photometry for a sample of 75 red giants down to MV = +2 in the relatively metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M71. The C(41− 42) colors reveal a bimodal distribution of CN band strengths generally anticorrelated with CH band strength as measured by the C(42 − 45) color. Both DDO colors agree well with those found in 47 Tucanae – a nearby...

We have serendipitously discovered an extremely lithium-rich star on the red giant branch of the globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272). An echelle spectrum obtained with the Keck I HIRES reveals a Li i λ6707 Å resonance doublet of 520 mÅ equivalent width, and our analysis places the star among the most Li-rich giants known: log ǫ(Li) ≃ +3.0. We determine the elemental abundances of this star, IV-101, ...
متن کامل1 High resolution infrared spectra of bulge globular clusters : Liller 1 and NGC 6553
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained echelle spectra covering the range 1.5 − 1.8 μm for 2 of the brightest giants in Liller 1 and NGC 6553, old metal rich globular clusters in the Galactic bulge. We use spectrum synthesis for the abundance analysis, and find [Fe/H] = −0.3 ± 0.2 and [O/H] = +0.3± 0.1 (from the OH lines) for the giants in both clusters. We measure strong l...
متن کاملOn the Origin of the Metallicity Dependence in Dynamically Formed Extragalactic Low-mass X-ray Binaries
Globular clusters (GCs) effectively produce dynamically-formed low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). Observers detect ∼ 100 times more LMXBs per stellar mass in GCs compared to stars in the fields of galaxies. It has also been observationally established that metal-rich GCs are about 3 times more likely to contain an X-ray source than their metal-poor counterparts. Recent observations have shown tha...
